Indian Rupee Strengthens Sharply as Record FCNR Inflows Bolster Forex Liquidity

The Indian rupee staged a robust recovery in early trade on Thursday, surging 47 paise to reach 94.26 against the US dollar. This upward momentum follows a positive closing session on Wednesday, where the currency had already gained 22 paise to settle at 94.73.

The sudden strength in the local unit is primarily attributed to a massive surge in foreign-currency deposit mobilization. According to the latest data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the nation’s special program for Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) deposits—known as FCNR(B)—has successfully attracted a staggering $127.226 billion as of August 31.

A Multi-Billion Dollar Liquidity Boost

When factoring in overseas foreign-currency borrowings (OFCB) and external commercial borrowings (ECB), the total inflows under these strategic measures have reached $136.377 billion. Market analysts suggest that this influx has significantly bolstered India’s foreign-exchange reserves, providing the RBI with greater flexibility to defend the rupee against external market pressures.

“This gives the RBI a long rope in terms of defending the rupee,” noted IFA Global in a recent research report. “It creates a huge sterilization challenge, as banking system liquidity surplus is expected to climb to approximately Rs 10 lakh crore as banks swap these deposits with the central bank.”

Balancing Global Headwinds

Despite the domestic optimism, global markets remain volatile. The dollar index—which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies—was trading down 0.16% at 99.43. Meanwhile, energy markets remain under scrutiny as Brent crude futures hovered at $95.48 per barrel. Investors are closely monitoring rising US-Iran tensions and potential supply chain disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz, which traditionally puts upward pressure on oil prices and, by extension, the rupee.

However, the domestic sentiment remains buoyant, aided by strong underlying inflows and proactive intervention by the central bank. The positive trend was mirrored in the equity markets, where the BSE Sensex climbed 221.17 points to 76,791.52, and the Nifty surged 59.55 points to 23,974.

Data from the exchange reflects sustained investor confidence, with Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) emerging as net buyers, purchasing equities worth Rs 6,688.37 crore in the previous session. As the market digests these developments, the surge in FCNR inflows remains a critical pillar of support for the rupee’s current trajectory.
