In comparison, the Hindi version, Drishyam 2 starring Ajay Devgn, had collected ₹36 crore nett in just its first two days. It eventually went on to become a massive success, finishing with a lifetime total of ₹231 crore nett. At first glance, the comparison may seem unfavorable for the Malayalam film, but the difference is quite natural when industry scale is considered.

Drishyam 2

The Hindi film industry caters to a much wider audience, spanning across more than 15 states in India. This gives Hindi films a significantly larger reach and box office potential. On the other hand, the Malayalam film industry is primarily concentrated in Kerala, making its overall market size much smaller in comparison.

Despite this, Mohanlal’s Drishyam franchise holds a special place in Malayalam cinema. The original Drishyam (2013) was a record-breaking blockbuster and is still regarded as one of the finest thrillers made in India. Its impact was so strong that it was remade in multiple languages.

Drishyam 3

While the Hindi remake achieved great commercial success, the kind of historic, industry-defining impact created by the original Malayalam film is rare and difficult to replicate. Drishyam 3 continues the legacy, performing well within its space while carrying forward one of Indian cinema’s most iconic franchises.
