Emplea Verde SBT: employment and environmental improvement in San Bartolome de Tirajana

The team of laborers, chainsaw operators and foremen of the ‘Emplea Verde SBT’ job placement project has already worked on an area of approximately 59.800 square meters by the beginning of June, in which some 48.575 kilos of plant waste have been removed for management and treatment as compost.

The project was launched by the Department of Local Development, headed by Deputy Mayor Elena Álamo Vega, to provide employment and training for seven months to 16 unemployed residents of the municipality who face difficulties integrating into the workforce. Its management, in collaboration with the Canary Islands Reforestation Foundation (Foresta), has a budget of €350.000, funded 50% by the City Council and 7% by the Department of Institutional Cooperation and International Solidarity of the Gran Canaria Island Council through the Canary Islands Development Fund (Fdcan).

The work carried out during the project’s first six months has primarily focused on the environmental improvement and conditioning of various sections of the GC-500 and GC-503 highways, as well as the areas of Meloneras, Bahía Feliz, San Fernando, Parque del Sur, and the Castillo del Romeral Cultural Center. In these locations, in addition to clearing vegetation, pruning large trees and shrubs, and cleaning and removing plant debris, restoration and beautification of green spaces were undertaken, along with the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems.

In addition, the action plan also includes tasks for the management and conservation of trees in all Infant and Primary schools in the municipality, in the three nursery schools and in the Secondary schools.
