Wataru Endo will miss this summer’s World Cup with Japan with the Liverpool star ruled out through injury
Liverpool star Wataru Endo will not be available for this summer’s World Cup as Japan officials confirm the midfielder will miss the tournament through injury. Endo had been called up to his national team’s squad for this summer’s tournament, having spent the majority of the remaining weeks of Liverpool’s season on the sidelines with injury.
The Japan international suffered a serious foot injury during Liverpool’s win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light back in February, which ruled him out for the majority of the campaign.
After being named in Japan’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, Endo was also named on the bench for Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Brentford on the final day of the Premier League season on May 24.
However, officials from the Japan national team have confirmed that Endo has been withdrawn from the squad.
Reports in Japan have stated that Endo was not involved in Japan’s training session in Nashville, Tennessee, on Thursday.
It has also been reported that Masakuni Yamamoto, Japan Football Association’s national team director, has stated that Endo’s foot injury has not improved and will be leaving the squad ahead of this summer’s World Cup.
Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Shuto Machino has been called up as Endo’s replacement in Japan’s squad for this summer’s World Cup.
