The Wymondham Habitat Bank, located between Flordon Common and Lower Wood in Ashwellthorpe, is part of Environment Bank’s national network of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) sites and is restoring nearly 55 acres of farmland into thriving habitats.
Eleanor Walker, senior ecologist at Environment Bank, said: “The nature recovery that we’ve seen so far at our Wymondham Habitat Bank is astounding.
“In just two months we have laid the foundations to support essential species, like birds and bats, through our creation of diverse habitats.
“This site allows key developments in Norwich to go ahead while also giving back to nature.”
The site is reintroducing rare habitats such as fenland and replanting black poplars, one of Britain’s rarest native trees.
A previously infilled “ghost pond” has also been excavated to restore freshwater habitats for species like the great crested newt.
The project supports BNG targets under the Environment Act 2021, requiring developers to deliver a minimum 10pc increase in biodiversity.
