Ashby Rotary Club has helped to protect the future of a local nature reserve by donating £1,000 towards the cost of gates.
Members of Ashby Castle Rotary Club visited Leicestershire and Rutland Kelham Bridge nature reserve in Ravenstone recently and enjoyed a guided walk by the reserve officer and volunteers.
During the tour, it was clear to the Rotary Club members that security was a problem on the reserve and it was important to the future of the project to create a safe space for wildlife to live, breed and feed without pressure from humans.
Metal gates were needed to provide this security and the Rotary Club’s environment team believed this would be a good cause to support with the close proximity to Ashby and environmental importance of the space.
The nature reserve is still relatively young but already has been reclaimed by nature, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching, as well as spying for many species of butterflies, dragonflies and rare mammals.

Ashby Castle Rotary Club has made a £1,000 donation toward the costs of the gates, which, along with other donations, helped the project fund the gates and get them installed.
Members of the Rotary Club attended the grand opening and were ‘delighted to see’ a plaque acknowledging the donation from the Rotary Club.
