Bandai Namco Unveils “Ace Combat Online”: A New Social Frontier for the Ace Combat 8 Experience
Bandai Namco has officially pulled back the curtain on Ace Combat Online, a robust, live-service-inspired suite of multiplayer modes set to accompany the highly anticipated Ace Combat 8. Moving beyond the traditional scope of the franchise, this companion experience aims to turn the dogfighting series into a long-term social hub for the global aviation community.
In a new trailer released across official social channels, developers showcased a variety of ways for players to engage, ranging from cooperative PvE raids to high-stakes competitive dogfights.
Tactical PvE and PvPvE Modes
The core of Ace Combat Online revolves around team-based objectives. Players can dive into “Co-Op Assault,” where two teams of four race to rack up points by destroying AI-controlled enemies and completing mission objectives.
For those seeking a more volatile experience, “Co-Op Warfare” introduces a PvPvE dynamic. Two teams of four compete in a score-based battle while being actively targeted by the opposing squad. A unique “threat level” mechanic adds a layer of risk: as teams destroy enemies, their threat level rises, increasing point gains but also offering higher rewards to the opposing team if they manage to shoot you down.
Additionally, the game will feature “Emergency Missions”—timed, high-stakes events. These include “Scramble” missions, pitting squads against elite NPC rivals, and “Emergency Sorties,” which function as eight-player raid-style encounters featuring iconic set-piece battles from the series’ storied history.
The Social Hangar
Perhaps the most significant addition is the new social lobby—an airforce base where players can meet, interact, and customize their avatars. Designed to foster a sense of community, the space includes retro arcade machines featuring classic Bandai Namco titles like Pac-Man and a jukebox that allows players to spin tracks from the series’ legendary soundtracks.
According to producer Manabu Shimomoto, this social hub is a direct response to a “fragmented” fanbase. “Ace Combat 7 was a success, and because of its success it created a lot of fans globally,” Shimomoto explained in an interview. “However, due to the lack of opportunities for fans to get together, we received a lot of feedback that these fans wanted to meet up with others. To live up to that expectation, we decided to create this digital lobby.”
Progression and the “Ace Pass”
To ensure long-term engagement, Ace Combat Online features a deep progression system. Pilots will earn levels by completing missions, unlocking new aircraft, special weapons, and performance-enhancing parts. Players can further customize their jets with various performance mods and cosmetic skins.
The platform will also implement a live-service staple: the “Ace Pass.” This battle pass system will cycle through new seasonal content every two months. While the pass offers early access to specific aircraft, Bandai Namco has confirmed that any planes featured in a pass will be made available for purchase individually once the season concludes.
Building for the Future
The ambition behind this project is clear: Bandai Namco is looking to replicate and exceed the longevity of Ace Combat 7, which sold over 7.5 million copies. By leaning into Ace Combat 8 as a long-term service, the team hopes to provide a consistent, evolving experience that keeps the community in the cockpit for years to come.
