Yoo Ah-in Set for Comeback in Occult Thriller ‘Vampir’ Following Drug Controversy

SEOUL, South Korea – Celebrated South Korean actor Yoo Ah-in is poised to make his much-anticipated return to the entertainment spotlight, starring in the upcoming occult thriller "Vampir." This marks his first major project since a high-profile drug scandal halted his career, with the film slated for a 2028 release.

The actor, whose career was at its zenith before the controversy, will take on a lead role in "Vampir," an occult film infused with supernatural and thriller elements. According to reports from The Korea Herald, Yoo Ah-in will portray a contract killer tasked with investigating a mysterious pagan occult group. His character is described as exceptionally composed and resilient, maintaining a calm demeanor even in the face of extreme challenges. However, as he delves deeper into the case, his foundational belief system begins to unravel.

The project boasts an impressive creative team, with Jang Jae-hyun, acclaimed director of the 2024 horror hit "Exhuma," at the helm. The cast is further strengthened by the inclusion of notable actors such as Lee Sung Min, Lee Jun Hyuk, Doy, Yoon Kyung Ho, and Choi Hyun Wook.

Principal photography for "Vampir" commenced this month, with official filming expected to begin shortly. The ensemble cast has already engaged in script readings and preparations, signaling a strong start to production. The film is targeting a theatrical release in 2028, generating significant anticipation for Yoo Ah-in’s return to the big screen.

The Shadow of Controversy: Yoo Ah-in’s Drug Case

Yoo Ah-in’s career encountered an abrupt halt following accusations of repeated illegal drug use. In South Korea, drug-related offenses carry severe penalties, and the actor was embroiled in a comprehensive investigation. Between 2020 and 2022, it was revealed that he illegally obtained propofol from various hospitals across Seoul on 181 separate occasions.

In February 2025, the court delivered its verdict, sentencing Yoo Ah-in to one year in jail, suspended for two years, along with a fine of 2 million KRW (approximately $1,500 USD). His probation period is set to continue until July 2027. Court documents indicated a revised sentence, stating, "Considering the motive, method, and consequences of the crime, as well as circumstances after the offence, the sentence handed down in the first trial was too heavy and unfair."

The drug controversy significantly impacted his professional commitments. Films like "The Match" and "Hi-Five," which he had completed prior to the scandal, saw delayed releases but eventually premiered last year. Notably, he was replaced as the lead in the second season of the popular Netflix series "Hellbound."

His comeback in "Vampir" is seen as a pivotal moment for the actor, offering a chance to re-establish his career and artistic contributions to the Korean entertainment industry.
