Torrent Gas Gears Up for Major IPO, Eyeing Up to $418 Million

NEW DELHI, India – August 18 (Reuters) – India’s Torrent Gas, a prominent player in the natural gas distribution sector, is poised to take a significant step towards its highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO). The company plans to file updated draft papers for an IPO aiming to raise up to 40 billion rupees (approximately $418.09 million) as early as this week, according to two sources with knowledge of the matter.

This move signals a substantial acceleration in Torrent Gas’s public listing plans and comes at a time when India’s primary market activity is experiencing a robust resurgence.

Torrent Gas, a key entity within the Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group – which also includes listed giants like Torrent Power and Torrent Pharma – plays a crucial role in providing essential energy infrastructure across India. The company specializes in supplying piped natural gas (PNG) to a wide array of customers, encompassing households and industries across eight states and one union territory. Its extensive network currently serves over 200,000 households and more than 1,300 industrial clients.

Beyond PNG distribution, Torrent Gas is also a significant operator in the compressed natural gas (CNG) market, managing approximately 500 CNG stations, as detailed on its official website. This dual-pronged approach positions the company strategically within India’s growing energy landscape, catering to both residential and commercial needs, as well as the increasing demand for cleaner transportation fuels.

While Torrent Gas has not yet responded to Reuters’ request for comment on its IPO plans, the upcoming filing represents a pivotal moment for the company. India’s markets regulator had previously granted approval for Torrent Gas’s confidential IPO filing in June. The updated draft red herring prospectus, expected to be released this week, will mark the first public disclosure of the company’s detailed IPO documents, offering investors a comprehensive look into its financials, operations, and growth strategies.

The timing of Torrent Gas’s IPO push aligns with a significant uptick in India’s primary market. After a subdued first half of the year, largely attributed to the global volatility caused by the Iran war-driven surge in crude oil prices, market activity has rebounded sharply. Since July, a remarkable 27 companies have either launched or announced their IPOs, nearly matching the 28 IPOs recorded during the entirety of the first half of 2026. This renewed investor confidence and liquidity in the market create a fertile ground for large-scale offerings like that of Torrent Gas.

The initial confidential filing mechanism, which Torrent Gas utilized, allows companies to submit their draft IPO papers to the markets regulator for review without making them publicly accessible until a firm decision is made to proceed with the offering. This approach provides flexibility and allows companies to refine their plans before a public unveiling.

With an ambitious target of up to 40 billion rupees, Torrent Gas’s IPO is set to be one of the more substantial listings in the current market, attracting considerable attention from institutional and retail investors alike. As India continues its trajectory of economic growth and energy demand, companies like Torrent Gas are central to fulfilling the nation’s evolving energy needs.
