Tim Paine Backs Ben Stokes for Explosive Opening Role with Adelaide Strikers

In a move that has electrified the Big Bash League (BBL) landscape, the Adelaide Strikers have secured the services of England’s talismanic all-rounder Ben Stokes for the upcoming season. With his one-year deal now confirmed, Strikers head coach Tim Paine has outlined a bold vision for the 35-year-old, positioning him as a key figure at the top of the batting order.

A New Chapter at the Top

While the Strikers utilized the successful opening partnership of Matt Short and Chris Lynn last season, the team is entering a period of tactical transition. With Lynn currently off-contract, coach Tim Paine is looking to maximize Stokes’ unique skill set by handing him the new ball.

“Stokes gives us a lot of flexibility,” Paine said. “I think initially my chats around how we would use him would probably be opening the batting. I think he’s made to open the batting in Big Bash. I think the pacy, bouncy wickets in Australia really suit him.”

Paine, who previously captained Australia, is no stranger to Stokes’ ability to dominate a game. He lauded the Englishman’s “360-degree” approach, noting, “I have been on the end of a couple of these devastating innings in Test cricket where you feel like you cannot defend the field. He can play 360 degrees. He has got power. He has got some real class.”

Statistically Proven

Although Stokes has predominantly batted in the middle order throughout his T20 career, his limited appearances as an opener reveal his true potential. In 16 innings as an opener, Stokes averages 36.53 with a strike rate of 138.48. Notably, both of his career T20 centuries—one for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2020 IPL and one for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017—came while occupying the opening slot.

Paine is confident that the Strikers’ setup will bring out the best in the veteran. “He can flick a switch, and he has got amazing power. His skill level with the bat and his play of spin, he is just a well-rounded, world-class batter. We think that is probably the best fit for him and for us.”

More Than Just a Batter

Beyond his prowess with the bat, Stokes’ value as a genuine all-rounder remains a critical asset for the Adelaide side. Paine intends to utilize him across all three departments, emphasizing that Stokes brings more than just runs to the pitch.

“He is a bit quicker than people think. He has got great skill and can swing the ball both ways,” Paine added. “We feel like we can use him in all phases of the game with the ball as well. He will impact in the field with his athleticism and just the way he competes.”

With 352 international wickets for England, Stokes’ capacity to deliver high-pressure spells is well-documented. As the Adelaide Strikers prepare for the season, the addition of Stokes brings not only tactical flexibility but also the grit and leadership of a player who has defined modern international cricket. Whether with the bat or the ball, all eyes will be on how the superstar integrates into the fast-paced environment of the BBL.
