A Legendary Reunion: Prabhu Deva and AR Rahman’s ‘Moonwalk’ Secures Diwali 2026 Slot

In a massive announcement that has sent ripples of excitement through the Tamil film industry, the makers of the upcoming dance-driven entertainer Moonwalk have officially locked in a worldwide theatrical release for Diwali 2026. This move makes the film the first major project to claim the coveted festival slot, setting the stage for what promises to be a spectacular cinematic event.

The project is particularly significant as it marks the long-awaited reunion of dancing legend Prabhu Deva and musical maestro AR Rahman. After a 25-year hiatus, the duo—who defined the 90s with cult classics like Kaadhalan, Mr Romeo, Love Birds, and Minsara Kanavu—are joining forces once again to bring a high-energy, family-oriented musical experience to the big screen.

A Musical Powerhouse

True to the legacy of their past collaborations, the music of Moonwalk is already generating buzz. AR Rahman has composed a five-track album, with a unique twist: the Oscar-winning composer has lent his own voice to every song in the film. The soundtrack, which includes tracks like ‘Yethu’, ‘Macarena’, ‘Tinga’, and ‘Mayile’, is designed to celebrate the festive spirit.

Beyond his musical contributions, Rahman is also set to make an on-screen appearance, portraying an “angry young film director,” while Prabhu Deva stars as Babootty, a passionate young film choreographer.

The Phenomenon of Yogi Babu

While the leads bring star power, the film features an experimental casting choice that has left audiences intrigued. Comedian Yogi Babu will be seen in an unprecedented 16 different roles. According to the actor, what started as a narration for a single character evolved into a complex narrative requiring him to embody 16 distinct personas throughout the film.

Behind the Scenes

Moonwalk marks the directorial debut of Manoj NS, the founder of a popular YouTube channel. The film boasts an expansive supporting cast, including Aju Varghese, Arjun Ashokan, Satz, Nishma Chengappa, Sushmitha Nayak, Redin Kingsley, Rajendran, Lollu Sabha Swaminathan, Deepa Shankar, Dr. Santhosh Jacob, and Ramkumar Natarajan.

The technical crew is equally formidable, with Anoop V Shylaja handling cinematography and Raymond Derrick Crasta overseeing the edit. The film’s intense dance sequences are helmed by choreographers Sekhar VJ, Piyush Chazia, and Sandy.

A Competitive Festive Season

The film is slated for a pan-Indian release, hitting theaters in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. While other heavyweights, such as projects featuring Suriya and Silambarasan, are rumored to be eyeing the same festive window, Moonwalk currently stands as the first official announcement for the 2026 Diwali season. With its blend of nostalgic musical magic, high-octane choreography, and a multi-character performance by Yogi Babu, Moonwalk is positioned to be a standout contender in the coming years.
