In a significant move for the PC gaming community, Nexus Mods—under the stewardship of its parent company, Chosen—has officially announced the acquisition of Nexus Mods acquires the popular community site SteamDB.
For over a decade, SteamDB has served as an indispensable resource for millions of users, developers, and publishers, providing real-time data, price tracking, and behind-the-scenes insights into the Steam ecosystem. While both platforms will continue to operate as independent entities, the acquisition promises to provide the much-needed infrastructure and resources to ensure the long-term stability of the site.
Addressing Founder Burnout
The decision to sell was largely driven by the personal toll of maintaining such a massive, data-heavy project. In a heartfelt blog post, SteamDB founder “xPaw” candidly spoke about the challenges of managing the platform in an increasingly hostile digital landscape.
“After COVID and with the rise of AI, the internet we once loved is gone, and with it my passion,” xPaw stated. He noted that the relentless pressure of scraping, upkeep, and the shifting dynamics of the web contributed to a profound sense of burnout, making it clear that he could no longer sustain the project alone.
A Promise of Continuity
Both Nexus Mods and the original SteamDB team were quick to reassure the community that the user experience will remain largely unchanged. Victor Folmann, CEO of Nexus Mods and founder of Chosen, emphasized that the company’s primary role is that of a “steward.”
“Our job isn’t to change what makes SteamDB special,” Folmann said in a statement. “It’s to give it the resources, team, and long-term stability it deserves, while building a sustainable foundation that allows us to keep investing in and improving it for many years to come.”
The Future: APIs and Sustainability
While the core functionality of SteamDB remains free, the new management team has been transparent about the need for sustainability. According to a newly published FAQ, the site does not intend to introduce disruptive advertising. Instead, the focus will shift toward professionalizing the platform’s utility.
One of the most requested features—a robust, public-facing API—is now being positioned as a potential addition, offering developers better ways to interact with the vast trove of data SteamDB maintains. While the team plans to look for ways to commercialize the platform to keep it running, they have maintained that the site’s fundamental features will remain accessible to the community.
For now, the transition appears to be a best-case scenario: a beloved, community-essential tool is being integrated into a larger, stable organization that understands the ecosystem it inhabits, rather than being shuttered or abandoned to the changing tides of the modern internet.
