Teenage Sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Duleep Trophy Debut Cut Short
BENGALURU: The much-hyped Duleep Trophy debut of teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ended in disappointment on Sunday, as the 15-year-old was dismissed for a quick-fire eight runs against North East Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground.
Sooryavanshi, opening the batting for East Zone alongside the experienced Abhimanyu Easwaran, offered fans an early glimpse of his attacking prowess. He began his innings with a flurry, striking back-to-back boundaries that hinted at a long stay at the crease. However, the aggressive approach that has defined his burgeoning T20 career proved his undoing in the longer format.
Attempting to maintain his positive momentum, Sooryavanshi was lured into a loose shot by North East Zone pacer Bishworjit Konthoujam. The youngster edged the final delivery of the over, with Joseph Lalthankhuma completing a sharp catch at gully. Sooryavanshi’s inaugural innings in this edition of the tournament lasted just six deliveries.
A Learning Curve in Red-Ball Cricket
The Duleep Trophy was viewed as a pivotal opportunity for the 15-year-old to prove his mettle in red-ball cricket. Despite the significant buzz surrounding his inclusion—and his appointment as the vice-captain of the East Zone squad led by Ishan Kishan—Sooryavanshi is still searching for consistency in first-class cricket.
Across his eight first-class appearances for Bihar, the youngster has struggled to find a rhythm, averaging just over 17 runs per innings. While he has shown flashes of brilliance—notably his highest score of 93—the challenge remains for him to translate his natural flair into sustained, innings-building performances at the senior level.
High Stakes for East Zone
While the spotlight was firmly on the teenage sensation, the East Zone lineup is packed with established international and domestic stars. Under the captaincy of Ishan Kishan, the team features stalwarts including veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami, batting mainstay Abhimanyu Easwaran, and seasoned campaigners like Shahbaz Ahmed and Mukesh Kumar.
Following North East Zone’s decision to bowl first, the focus shifted to the depth of the East Zone lineup to steady the ship after the early loss of their young opener. For those following the live action, the Duleep Trophy continues to serve as a high-pressure testing ground for India’s next generation of talent.
East Zone remains the firm favorite in the quarterfinal clash, with a potential semifinal date against either Central Zone or South Zone awaiting them on August 30, should they successfully navigate the current encounter.
