Tensions Flare in Colombo: Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando in Heated Confrontation During Second Test

COLOMBO – The second Test match between India and Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club saw tempers boil over on Sunday morning as Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando were involved in a heated on-field altercation.

The incident occurred during the 17th over of India’s first innings. Jaiswal, who had been looking in fine touch, was dismissed for a brisk 45 off 53 balls. After having been struck for three boundaries by the Indian batter in the preceding over, Fernando managed to find a breakthrough with a length delivery from round the wicket. The ball jagged back in, caught the thick inside edge of Jaiswal’s bat, and crashed into the stumps.

A Fiery Send-off

Following the dismissal, the atmosphere turned sour as Fernando celebrated the wicket with an animated and aggressive send-off directed at the departing batter. While Jaiswal initially began his walk back to the pavilion, he stopped and turned, leading to a tense, face-to-face confrontation with the Sri Lankan pacer.

The two players exchanged heated words, moving toward each other in a manner that neared physical contact. The situation was eventually defused when the Sri Lankan captain intervened, stepping between the two to restore order and lead his teammate away.

Match Context: A Hard-Fought Morning

The dismissal of Jaiswal—who had looked fluent while hitting nine boundaries—was a significant blow for the visitors. India had won the toss and elected to bat, hoping to build on their 1-0 series lead following their 165-run victory in the first Test at Galle.

By the end of the opening session, India found themselves at 66/2. Beyond Jaiswal, the team had already lost the wicket of opening partner KL Rahul. Despite steady partnerships of 37 and 29 runs, the tourists struggled to convert their starts into a substantial foundation on a challenging morning.

Both sides made tactical adjustments for the clash. Sri Lanka handed a Test debut to Kamil Mishara, who replaced Nishan Madushka, while Pasindi Sooriyabandara retained his spot following his appearance as a concussion substitute in the first match. India opted for a structural change as well, bringing in spin-bowling all-rounder Saransh Jain—a seasoned first-class performer with 188 wickets and over 2,200 runs—in place of Kuldeep Yadav.

As the series continues, the ugly scenes in Colombo highlight the mounting pressure on both sides as India looks to seal the series and Sri Lanka fights to keep their hopes alive.
