Keyfield International Enters Dredging Sector with $24.7 Million Acquisition of Mega-Dredger
Keyfield International Bhd has officially announced its strategic expansion into the dredging industry through the acquisition of the massive trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Inai Kenanga. The purchase, valued at $24.7 million, represents a significant milestone for the group as it diversifies its maritime portfolio.
The vessel, which was constructed in 2016, was acquired from Inai Rimba Sdn Bhd. Renowned for its impressive technical specifications, the Inai Kenanga boasts a massive hopper capacity of 32,205 cubic meters. At the time of its commissioning, the vessel held the title of the largest dredger in Asia and the third-largest of its kind globally, having previously been instrumental in major dredging and land reclamation projects across Malaysia.
A Strategic Asset Acquisition
The decision to acquire the vessel stemmed from a unique set of circumstances. Following the decision of the Inai Kenanga’s former owner to enter receivership, Keyfield International identified an opportunity to secure a high-value maritime asset at a price point below current market valuation.
Datuk Darren Kee Chit Huei, Group Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of Keyfield, emphasized the financial prudence behind the deal. “With the former owner of Inai Kenanga having entered receivership, we were presented with a unique opportunity to acquire this asset at below market value,” said Datuk Darren Kee. “Leveraging the strength of our balance sheet, this acquisition will be funded through our internal cash—hence not requiring any borrowings.”
Strengthening Maritime Capabilities
The move into the dredging sector signals a bold shift for Keyfield, which is looking to capitalize on its existing maritime expertise. By deploying such a high-capacity TSHD, the company is positioning itself to take on large-scale infrastructure and land reclamation projects that require significant technical capability and reach.
Industry analysts suggest that the company’s ability to fund the purchase entirely through internal cash reserves demonstrates a robust financial position, providing the group with a competitive edge as it integrates this heavy-duty asset into its operational fleet.
With the transaction finalized, the industry will be closely monitoring how Keyfield International utilizes the Inai Kenanga to reshape its service offerings and influence the regional dredging landscape.
