Campbell Wilson to Join Air New Zealand Board, Signaling Departure from Air India and Shift to Non-Executive Role

Auckland, New Zealand – Campbell Wilson, the current Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India, is set to transition from his executive duties as he joins the board of Air New Zealand. This appointment marks a significant shift in Wilson’s distinguished career, moving him into a non-executive capacity after more than three decades at the forefront of the aviation industry.

Wilson, a New Zealand native, has been instrumental in spearheading the transformation of Air India since his appointment. His tenure, however, is drawing to a close, with his resignation from the airline having been announced on April 7th. He is expected to step down from his leadership role at Air India in September.

Air New Zealand officially confirmed Wilson’s appointment in a regulatory filing on Wednesday, alongside the addition of Robert McDonald, another former airline executive, to its board. Both appointments are subject to the re-election by shareholders at the airline’s Annual Shareholders’ Meeting (ASM) scheduled for September 24th.

This move aligns with Wilson’s previously stated intentions. In June, during an interview with PTI in Brazil, he indicated a desire to step back from full-time executive positions within the airline industry. "I’m going to step back from full-time executive work, and (look at) advisory board (role), adjunct lecturing that sort of thing," he remarked, expressing an interest in mentoring younger individuals.

Wilson brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Air New Zealand board. His extensive career includes various senior positions at Singapore Airlines and leadership roles within prominent international aviation organizations. He has served on the board of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and was a Board Executive Committee member of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines and Star Alliance.

His return to a non-executive role with Air New Zealand, his home country’s flag carrier, represents a full-circle moment in his professional journey. Air New Zealand currently operates with seven board members, a number that will be adjusted with the upcoming retirement of board member Larry De Shon next month. Dame Therese Walsh chairs the board.

Robert McDonald, the other new appointee, also boasts a strong background with Air New Zealand, having previously served as its Chief Financial Officer. He currently holds chairmanships at Vero Insurance New Zealand and Contact Energy Ltd.

Meanwhile, the leadership transition at Air India is also well underway. On August 5th, the airline announced the appointment of Tewolde Gebremariam, former chief of Ethiopian Airlines Group, as its new CEO and Managing Director. This ensures a smooth handover as Campbell Wilson prepares for his next chapter.
