India won both the men’s and women’s team titles at the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships 2026 after beating Malaysia in the respective finals at the Thyagraj Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday.
The championships run from July 27 to August 2, parallel to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Table tennis does not feature on the CWG sports programme this year.
India’s men’s team – the top seeds – overcame eighth seeds Malaysia 3-2 in a closely fought final to defend its title.
Manav Thakkar gave India the lead with a 3-1 victory over Javen Choong before Manush Shah edged Wong Qi Shen in a five-game thriller to make it 2-0.
Malaysia fought back through Tey Hong Yu, who beat Sathiyan Gnanasekaran in straight games. Wong Qi Shen then defeated Thakkar in another five-game contest to level the tie at 2-2.
With the title on the line, Manush Shah produced a dominant display to beat Javen Choong 3-0 and seal the title for India.
The Indian men’s team featured Manav Thakkar, Manush Shah, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Harmeet Desai and Payas Jain.
India entered the final unbeaten, recording 3-0 victories over Zimbabwe and Malaysia in the group stage before defeating Sri Lanka, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and England without dropping a tie.
The second-seeded Indian women’s team were more authoritative in its final, defeating sixth seeds Malaysia 3-0 to secure the title.
Swastika Ghosh opened with a 3-1 win over Ai Xin Tee before Sreeja Akula overcame Karen Lyne Anak Dick in five games to double India’s advantage.
Yashaswini Ghorpade then wrapped up the contest with a 3-1 victory against Li Sian Alice Chang.
India’s women’s team comprised Syndrela Das, Sreeja Akula, Yashaswini Ghorpade, Sutirtha Mukherjee and Swastika Ghosh.
Like the men, the women also remained unbeaten throughout the team competition, registering 3-0 wins over the Maldives, South Africa, Northern Ireland, Sri Lanka, Australia and Canada before overcoming England 3-1 in the semi-finals.
England won bronze medals in both the men’s and women’s team events. Singapore picked up the other men’s bronze, while Australia completed the women’s podium.
The Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships returned for the first time since the 2019 edition in Cuttack, where India became only the third nation in history to sweep all seven gold medals.
The 2026 edition also features seven medal events: men’s team, women’s team, men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The singles and doubles events will end on August 2.
