eBay Cracks Down on Early Pokémon 30th Anniversary Listings at TPCi’s Request

In a decisive move to protect its intellectual property and maintain product integrity, eBay has begun aggressively removing listings for upcoming Pokémon TCG 30th Anniversary merchandise. The marketplace platform is categorizing these items as “stolen property,” acting upon direct communication from The Pokémon Company International (TPCi).

Unauthorized Distribution Sparks Policy Enforcement

The crackdown targets sellers who have managed to obtain and list items from the highly anticipated 30th Anniversary set before their official launch date. In official correspondence sent to affected sellers, eBay stated that it was alerted by TPCi that these specific products have not yet been released through authorized retail channels.

“The sale of stolen property is not allowed on eBay,” the notification reads. “eBay has received communication from The Pokémon Company International indicating that 30th Anniversary Pokémon trading cards are not distributed or made available for public sale through authorized channels as of today.”

eBay has warned sellers that these items likely originated “outside of approved manufacturing and distribution processes.” Consequently, the platform is prohibiting the relisting of these products unless sellers can provide concrete documentation proving they were obtained through legitimate, authorized sources.

A Growing Trend of Leaks

For several weeks, social media has been flooded with “pack openings” and reveals of 30th Anniversary products. Investigations suggest these items entered the secondary market through leaks within the distribution chain, such as unauthorized access to warehouses or distributor facilities. The phenomenon initially gained momentum in Australia before spreading globally.

This issue is not new for the Pokémon brand. Since the Shining Fates release in 2021, TPCi has struggled with recurring factory and distribution leaks. In response, the company established an internal task force dedicated to tracking the origin of these leaks and mitigating the impact on the TCG ecosystem.

The Challenge of Enforcement

While eBay has taken a firm stance to curb the unauthorized trade, the problem persists elsewhere. Other online platforms continue to allow the sale of pre-release Pokémon merchandise, often at exorbitant “early-adopter” prices. Industry observers note that many of these secondary marketplaces turn a blind eye to the illicit nature of the listings, as they collect significant transaction fees from the inflated sales.

The removal of these listings from eBay marks the latest escalation in TPCi’s ongoing battle to preserve the excitement of official releases.
