England Take Command as Root and Brook Shine on Day 2 of First Test

MULTAN – England established a stranglehold on the opening Test against Pakistan on Thursday, utilizing a series of disciplined half-centuries to finish Day 2 with a commanding 195-run first-innings lead. Despite persistent weather interruptions, England reached 366-8 by the close of play, leaving Pakistan with a mountain to climb as the game progresses.

The hosts resumed the day at 112-2, but heavy rain caused a significant delay in the morning. Once play finally got underway, the English batting lineup capitalized on Pakistan’s inconsistent bowling and erratic fielding, with four different batters surpassing the 50-run mark.

The Brook-Root Masterclass

Harry Brook, currently the world’s top-ranked Test batter, delivered the most significant performance of the day at his home ground. Though he narrowly missed out on a century, falling for 91, his innings was a masterclass in controlled aggression. Having survived a dropped catch at second slip by stand-in Pakistan captain Salman Agha when he was on just 1, Brook went on to punish the bowling attack with 13 boundaries. His resilient knock was eventually brought to an end by Ali Usman, who secured his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket by pinning the batter leg-before-wicket.

Earlier in the day, Joe Root and Jordan Cox orchestrated a brilliant 150-run partnership that dictated the tempo of the morning session. Cox, appearing in just his second Test, showcased immense maturity to register his maiden half-century. Shortly after, Root brought up his 109th Test fifty, further cementing his legacy as he nears the 14,000-run milestone, trailing only the legendary Sachin Tendulkar on the all-time list.

Missed Opportunities

While England’s dominance was clear, the coaching staff will likely emphasize the "what-ifs." Root (66), Cox (73), and Dan Lawrence (51) all reached significant milestones but failed to convert their starts into triple-figure scores.

Pakistan’s bowling figures were headlined by Ali Usman, who claimed 5-92, yet the visiting side remained plagued by defensive lapses. A prime example came when Khurram Shahzad failed to hold onto a straightforward caught-and-bowled chance against Cox when the batter was on 57. However, Pakistan did manage to strike late in the day as England’s middle order faltered under the pressure of the gloomy conditions.

Looking Ahead to Day 3

As the light faded, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith remained at the crease, unbeaten on 16 alongside Jofra Archer. With a substantial lead of 195, England is firmly in the driver’s seat.

Fans can keep track of every development as the match reaches its critical stage by following the latest live score updates. With two wickets still in hand, England will look to pad their lead on Friday before unleashing their bowlers on a Pakistan side desperate to find a foothold in the contest.
