Environment in spotlight as programme released for What a Wonderful World Festival in Northumberland


Tickets are now on sale for the What a Wonderful World Festival at Alnwick Playhouse and beyond with an exciting programme of events lined up.

Highlights include, on Saturday June 27, ‘Cut Bills, Cut Carbon, Build Better!’ which brings ideas and advice from experts on making our homes warmer and healthier.

The main speaker, Dr Alan James, transformed a derelict church in Northumberland into one of the UK’s most energy-efficient homes and was featured on ‘Guy Martin’s House without Bills’ on Channel 4. A Q&A session follows with a panel of experts on retrofit, renewables and community energy.

Festival chair, Chris Algar and husband Mac will open their new low-energy bungalow in Alnwick to the public. Find out what it’s like to live in on Saturday, June 13 or Sunday, June 21.

Sing for the Planet’ – join a choir workshop to sing favourite songs on an environmental theme with Alison Rushby on Sunday, June 28 at the Playhouse followed by a concert at 3pm. Write a poem on a Festival theme for publication in the Gazette. Read your poem at ‘Poets Go Wild’ at Hauxley Discovery Centre on Saturday 27 June. Send it to [email protected] to reserve a slot.

Walk in the Hepple Wilds with an artist/archaeologist and the resident ecologist and create your own artistic response. Identify edible plants and create a work of art in the beautiful College Valley. Children are invited to make lanterns with popular artist and crafter, Anna Corbett.

Liz Anderson, Festival co-director said: “It was a touching moment when Sir David Attenborough concluded his 100th Birthday concert with the lyrics of the song ‘What a Wonderful World’ to the 5000-strong audience at the Albert Hall. The Festival is a great way of celebrating our wonderful world with family and friends.”

The Festival, running from June 20-29, includes award-winning singer songwriter, Jon Boden, wildlife visits to Hepple and the College Valley, citizen science, music and poetry at Rothbury, film, children’s and family events in Alnwick and Berwick.

On Friday, June 26 local sea scouts join up with Alnwick Youth Theatre to create a special variety show entitled ‘All in the Same Boat’ with music and drama to tell us how they want us to manage the planet’s future.
