Transition Town Wellington has provided an update on the various community gardening sites around the town along with a preview of plans for the rest of May.
The dates of the month’s community gardening sessions – open to everyone irrespective of experience – are included after the latest update.
Fox’s Field
April saw the last of the planting of fruit bushes at the start of the month and the start of the herbaceous perennial planting at the end of the month, along with lots of the usual weeding and mulching!
In May we will continue mulching and creating new paths as well as keeping weeds at bay.
Longacre
This site just gets better every year. Do go and visit when you can.
Our focus at this time of year is minimal grass cutting, working just on smaller areas and paths, and to ensure all the soft fruit is growing well and accessible for when it ripens in June/July.
Linden Meadow
We continue our monthly scything session to care for the new trees and meadow in this beautiful site.
Post Close
The wildflowers here have lots of promise to be their best ever this year!
We’ve now completed the gardening tasks apart from keeping the paths cut until around early August.
Swains Lane Nature Reserve
The grass under the trees here is no longer scythed by Simon Ratsey, so we need to train a new team to scythe the grass on this site! So this is an invitation anyone who lives nearby to get involved and come along to a special beginners class led by Somerset Scythe School’s Andi Rickard on Friday, May 15th. The grass is at its best to cut at this time of year, so we can enjoy the apple crunch sound as we swing our blades.
