Global Cricket Community Rallies Behind Nepal Amid Catastrophic Flooding
KATHMANDU – The global cricketing community is uniting in solidarity with Nepal as the Himalayan nation grapples with the aftermath of a catastrophic flood disaster that has claimed hundreds of lives and left thousands missing.
Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis became the latest high-profile athlete to voice his support on Saturday. Reflecting on a personal visit to the country last year, the veteran cricketer expressed his profound sorrow over the destruction caused by the recent glacial collapse.
“I was lucky enough to visit Nepal last year and experience firsthand the kindness of its people and the incredible beauty of the country,” du Plessis wrote on X. “It’s devastating to see what has happened. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, and with the families and communities facing such heartbreaking loss.”
Legends Lend Their Voices
Du Plessis joins a chorus of Indian cricket icons who have been vocal in their support since the disaster struck. Legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar took to social media on Thursday to share an empathetic message, highlighting the plight of those waiting for news of missing loved ones.
“There is perhaps no greater uncertainty than not knowing whether someone you love is safe,” Tendulkar stated. “My heart goes out to all the families affected by the devastating floods in Nepal… Praying for their loved ones and for the rescue teams working tirelessly to reach them.”
Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan also shared a poignant tribute to the resilience of the Nepalese people, noting that the visuals emerging from the disaster-hit regions were “heartbreaking.”
A Nation in Crisis
The devastation was triggered by an ice-rock avalanche following a massive glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border. The resulting torrent of water, mud, and debris decimated critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges, residential homes, and several hydropower projects.
Rescue operations remain in a critical phase as emergency personnel battle difficult terrain and persistent rainfall. Thousands of security forces, led by the Nepal Army, are currently working to reach those stranded in remote areas.
International Support and Reconstruction
In response to the emergency, neighboring India has launched a significant humanitarian relief mission. According to Nepalese officials, New Delhi has already dispatched 57.6 tonnes of relief supplies and deployed an elite 11-member team—including medical professionals and specialized tunnel rescue experts—to assist in the operation.
Nepal’s Finance Minister, Swarnim Wagle, expressed deep gratitude for India’s swift intervention, specifically highlighting the “exceptionally generous” stance taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Wagle indicated that while the current focus remains on urgent search and rescue, discussions regarding long-term reconstruction assistance from India are already underway.
As the nation transitions from emergency rescue to eventual recovery, the messages of hope from global figures like du Plessis and Tendulkar serve as a reminder of the international community’s commitment to supporting Nepal through this period of profound grief.
