Govinda Reflects on His ‘Innocent’ Past, Expresses Regret Over Being ‘Shareef’

Mumbai, India – Bollywood’s beloved 90s icon, Govinda, has once again captured headlines, this time with a candid revelation about his personal and professional journey. In a recent media interaction, the actor delved into his past, expressing a surprising regret over his perceived innocence and loyalty during his formative years in the industry.

Despite facing numerous extramarital allegations from his wife, Sunita Ahuja, Govinda maintained that he was a remarkably decent, well-behaved, and innocent man for a significant portion of his life. He claimed that up until his early 30s, he was so ‘shareef’ (innocent and loyal) that he now looks back with a sense of regret.

Govinda’s Candid Confession: “I Regret Being So Shareef”

Speaking to ANI, Govinda recounted how his mother would often defend his character to Sunita. “Whenever she would say something to me,” he shared, “my mother would tell her, “Sunita, because of you, Govinda doesn’t even meet many of his heroines. As soon as the pack-up happens, he comes straight home.”

When the interviewer highlighted that fidelity was a basic expectation within marriage, Govinda countered with a poignant observation: “Several people had wives, but how many people actually remain honest?”

Emphasising his profound innocence in those years, he continued, “I was so decent and well-behaved until the age of 33-34 that I feel embarrassed myself thinking about why I remained so innocent for so long.” He then used a striking metaphor to illustrate his point: “leaving hungry from a sweets shop…how tragic.” This evocative statement suggests a feeling of having missed out on experiences or opportunities due to his strict adherence to a virtuous path.

Recalling a Clueless 20s

Further elaborating on his bygone era, Govinda admitted to being largely oblivious during a crucial period of his life. “From 21 to 34, I simply couldn’t understand what was happening,” he confessed. “I would think, ‘Uff, she’s looking this way, something else is happening,’” highlighting a perceived naiveté and perhaps a lack of engagement with the social dynamics around him during his peak career years.

Addressing Extramarital Allegations

During the same interaction, Govinda also took the opportunity to address his wife Sunita Ahuja’s allegations of extramarital affairs. While not directly refuting them, he subtly criticized the tendency of some individuals to gain notoriety by speaking negatively about others. He also took a moment to acknowledge Sunita’s significant contributions to their family, particularly in raising their children and maintaining the household’s stability.
