India Dominates Galle Test as Suthar Praises "World-Class" Jadeja

Galle, Sri Lanka – India solidified their commanding position in the opening Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, securing a substantial 178-run first-innings lead despite a rain-interrupted third day. Spearheading India’s bowling attack was young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, who bagged four crucial wickets and subsequently lauded his veteran spin partner, Ravindra Jadeja, for his unparalleled consistency.

Speaking to reporters after the day’s play, Suthar acknowledged Sri Lanka’s resilience, particularly a formidable 146-run sixth-wicket stand between Sonal Dinusha and Niroshan Dickwella. Despite this resistance, Suthar affirmed that the Indian team remained unwavering in their strategic approach.

"We wanted to stick to our plans of the first session, the ball was turning in all sessions, and they played really well in the second session," Suthar explained. "There wasn’t much change in our approach. There were some umpire calls also… they rotated the strike really well. The ball didn’t get that soft.”

Suthar, who returned impressive figures of 4 for 76 as Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 284, emphasized the simplicity and effectiveness of their bowling strategy. "Plan was to bowl in good areas. Simple plan. Just to be on the line, and keep it stump to stump,” he stated, highlighting the focus on accuracy and attacking the stumps.

A significant highlight of the day was the exceptional performance of Ravindra Jadeja, who claimed 3 for 57 and reached a monumental career milestone, completing 350 Test wickets. Suthar, the 24-year-old all-rounder, expressed his admiration for Jadeja’s craft. “Lots to learn from him. His consistency in hitting the same spot is world class,” Suthar remarked, underscoring the invaluable experience of bowling alongside the seasoned campaigner.

Jadeja’s achievement places him in an exclusive club, becoming only the fifth Indian to take 350 Test wickets. Furthermore, he joins an even more elite group of cricketers – only the fourth overall – to combine at least 4,000 Test runs with 350 wickets. This distinguished list includes cricketing legends Kapil Dev, Ian Botham, and Daniel Vettori, solidifying Jadeja’s status as one of the game’s finest all-rounders.

India’s commanding first innings total was built upon the back of Devdutt Padikkal’s magnificent 167, ably supported by 82 from KL Rahul and a fluent 51 from Dhruv Jurel. In response, Sri Lanka’s innings concluded at 284, with Sonal Dinusha registering his maiden Test century (110) and Niroshan Dickwella contributing a valuable 80.

The day’s play was prematurely halted by persistent rain, leaving India in an exceptionally strong position heading into the penultimate day. With a substantial lead already in hand, India will be looking to press home their advantage and secure a convincing victory in the series opener.
