New Delhi, India – Aspiring postgraduate students in science and related disciplines can mark their calendars as the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) is set to open the registration window for the Joint Admission Test for Masters (IIT JAM) 2027 on September 5, 2026. IIT Kharagpur, the organizing institute for JAM 2027, has also officially launched the dedicated website: IIT JAM 2027 registration.

The entire application process will be conducted online through the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS). Candidates will have a little over a month to submit their applications, with the deadline set for October 12, 2026.

Comprehensive Information Brochure to be Released Soon

Before the registration officially begins, IIT Kharagpur will release the detailed JAM 2027 information brochure on August 22, 2026. This crucial document will serve as a comprehensive guide for applicants, outlining essential details such as eligibility criteria, application requirements, the examination pattern, fee structure, available test papers, and other pertinent admission-related conditions.

Prospective candidates are strongly advised to meticulously review the brochure before completing their application forms, as eligibility requirements can vary significantly depending on the specific postgraduate program and the institute offering the course.

Examination Structure and Schedule

The IIT JAM 2027 examination is firmly scheduled for February 14, 2027, and will be conducted in two distinct sessions on the same day.

The morning session, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, will cover Chemistry (CY), Geology (GG), and Mathematics (MA).

The afternoon session, running from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, will include Biotechnology (BT), Economics (EN), Mathematical Statistics (MS), and Physics (PH).

Applicants can choose to appear for one or two test papers. However, those opting for two papers must ensure their selections are scheduled in different sessions to avoid any clashes.

Seven Diverse Test Papers Offered

JAM 2027 will feature seven test papers, catering to a wide range of scientific disciplines:

  • Biotechnology
  • Chemistry
  • Economics
  • Geology
  • Mathematical Statistics
  • Mathematics
  • Physics

The choice of test paper is a critical decision in the application process, as JAM scores are directly linked to specific program admission requirements. Therefore, candidates should carefully verify the eligibility and subject prerequisites of their desired postgraduate courses before making their selections.

Eligibility and Admission Pathways

JAM is a national-level entrance examination designed for admission to various postgraduate programs in science and allied fields at participating Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Generally, candidates who have successfully completed their undergraduate degree, as well as those in the final year of their qualifying degree, are eligible to appear for the examination. However, specific eligibility conditions for each program and institute will be fully detailed in the information brochure released on August 22.

Domestic Examination Centres Only

IIT Kharagpur has confirmed that JAM 2027 will be conducted exclusively at examination centres across India. There will be no international examination centres available for the 2027 cycle. The examination system will encompass multiple IIT zones, including IISc Bengaluru, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee. Candidates will be required to indicate their preferred examination cities during the application process, and these choices should be made with careful consideration, as the availability of specific cities will depend on logistical arrangements.

JAM Score: A Gateway to Postgraduate Opportunities

The Joint Admission Test for Masters serves as a significant national entrance examination for students aspiring to pursue postgraduate education in science and related disciplines. A strong JAM score can unlock opportunities for admission to MSc and other postgraduate programs, subject to the eligibility criteria of the participating institute and the specific course. The official JAM 2027 website currently highlights approximately 3,000 available seats across various participating IIT postgraduate programs.

It is crucial to note that merely clearing the JAM examination does not automatically guarantee admission. Candidates must also fulfill the specific eligibility requirements of their chosen program and successfully navigate the subsequent admission procedures stipulated by the respective institute.
