India’s Railway Revolution: Plans for 260 Vande Bharat Sleeper Rakes Unveiled
Since the debut of the Vande Bharat Express in 2019, Indian Railways has fundamentally altered the landscape of domestic train travel. While the initial chair-car models set a new benchmark for speed and comfort, the national transporter is now poised to redefine long-distance overnight journeys with its ambitious Vande Bharat sleeper train fleet.
With a massive rollout plan encompassing 260 new rakes, India is scaling up production to provide a world-class, semi-high-speed alternative to conventional long-distance rail travel.
Expanding the Network
The momentum behind the project is visible, with the first pair of sleeper trains already deployed on the Guwahati-Howrah route. While the industry eagerly awaits the launch of the second pair—rumored to be slated for the high-demand Bengaluru-Mumbai corridor—the focus remains on ramping up manufacturing capabilities.
The production strategy involves a multi-pronged approach:
- BEML: Tasked with the initial production of 10 trains, each featuring 16-car rakes.
- ICF Chennai: Set to produce 50 trains with 24-coach configurations, incorporating dedicated pantry cars for extended journeys.
- Kinet Railway Solutions (RVNL-TMH): An Indo-Russian joint venture currently manufacturing 120 trainsets at the Marathwada Rail Coach Factory in Latur.
- Titagarh-BHEL JV: Awarded the contract for the remaining 80 rakes.
Official timelines indicate that the first prototypes from these private-sector partnerships are expected to roll out by March 31, 2025, following a rigorous development process at the upgraded Latur facility.
Engineered for Excellence: Key Features
Drawing inspiration from contemporary European rail standards, the Vande Bharat sleeper series is designed for an operational speed of 160 kmph and a testing capacity of 180 kmph. Unlike traditional locomotives, these trains utilize a distributed power system, allowing for faster acceleration and deceleration.
The interior amenities are designed to surpass the experience of the existing Rajdhani Express, focusing on passenger comfort and safety:
- Premium Accommodations: Each 16-coach rake includes 11 AC 3-tier coaches, four AC 2-tier coaches, and one luxurious AC First Class coach equipped with showers and hot water.
- Enhanced Comfort: Features include ergonomically redesigned berths, improved access to upper berths, night lighting, and integrated passenger information systems.
- Safety & Tech: Beyond the standard, the trains are integrated with the indigenous KAVACH anti-collision system, CCTV surveillance, and an emergency communication link between passengers and the driver.
- Modern Utility: Passengers will benefit from modular pantry units, bio-vacuum toilets (with dedicated facilities for disabled travelers), automated doors, and individual charging points with reading lights at every seat.
- Climate Control: Fully sealed gangways and automatic interconnecting doors ensure superior air quality and consistent cabin temperatures.
As these trains begin to enter active service, they represent more than just a logistical upgrade; they are a clear indicator of India’s commitment to modernizing its rail infrastructure to meet the demands of a growing, tech-savvy populace.
