India Pushes to Stabilize Ties with Bangladesh, Prioritizing Economic Growth Over Political Friction
New Delhi: Amidst a cooling of diplomatic relations, India is moving to recalibrate its approach toward Bangladesh, advocating for a pragmatic focus on economic cooperation and people-to-people ties. While political tensions regarding the status of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have complicated the bilateral agenda, New Delhi is signaling that the long-term prosperity of both nations should not be held hostage to political volatility.
The relationship has faced significant strain since August 2024, when Sheikh Hasina sought refuge in India following her departure from Dhaka. The situation was further exacerbated when Hasina held a press interaction in New Delhi, a move that prompted Bangladesh to postpone a planned visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
However, in a significant diplomatic outreach, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, met with the Bangladeshi Minister of Commerce, Industries, Textiles, and Jute, Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, to underscore the necessity of a reset.
“Business Over Politics”
“Let us have business-to-business ties together. Politics will continue in its own way,” High Commissioner Trivedi stated during a post-meeting address. “Business and what is due to the common man—giving that is our responsibility.”
Trivedi emphasized that the core of the bilateral relationship must be built on mutual respect between two sovereign, independent nations. “Nobody is big, nobody is small. All are equals, and we have to work on that footing,” he added.
India’s message is clear: while democratic processes naturally involve political friction, the primary objective for both administrations should be to satisfy the aspirations of the youth in both countries. “The real question is what do the common people want? They want education, health, jobs, good roads, and electricity. This will happen with business-to-business ties,” Trivedi noted.
Economic Resilience
Despite the heightened political sensitivity, the economic foundation of the relationship remains surprisingly robust. Bangladesh’s Commerce Minister, Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, revealed that bilateral trade currently stands at $13 billion, underscoring that commercial interests frequently transcend political shifts.
“Economic considerations often override a lot of other things,” Minister Muktadir said. “We have to look at our economic interests because economic interests mean that the people in both countries will exercise their rights to enjoy services and purchases at competitive prices.”
Looking ahead, both nations are exploring concrete steps to formalize this cooperation. An Indian industry delegation recently proposed the formation of a collaborative task force dedicated to trade infrastructure, alongside a second initiative to enhance digital infrastructure across Bangladesh.
The Path of Interdependency
Both officials highlighted the concept of interdependency as the key to regional stability. High Commissioner Trivedi described the relationship as a “family,” where each nation relies on the other for developmental progress.
“When the economy moves ahead of politics, the politics follows behind,” Trivedi remarked. “Economy will bring development to the people. And when people think that this relation is good for us, then politics will be a compulsion.”
As both New Delhi and Dhaka navigate this sensitive transition, the emphasis remains on fostering peace, prosperity, and demography-focused policies. By prioritizing the needs of their young populations, India and Bangladesh are seeking to move toward a future where economic synergy acts as a safeguard against the cyclical nature of regional politics.
