Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Pitches India as Global Innovation and Manufacturing Powerhouse in Toronto
TORONTO – Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has called upon Canadian businesses to deepen their engagement with India, positioning the country as an emerging global hub for production, innovation, services, and exports. Addressing a high-level business roundtable in Toronto, the Finance Minister emphasized that India’s economic transformation is structural, offering a unique value proposition for long-term international investors.
A Compelling Destination for Capital
Highlighting the strategic advantages of the Indian market, Sitharaman noted that the country offers a “combination that is difficult to match.” She pointed to India’s massive scale, sustained growth trajectory, and a young, burgeoning population that is driving unprecedented domestic consumption.
“India has emerged as a platform for global production, innovation, services and exports,” the Minister stated, inviting Canadian firms to build long-term operations that cater not only to the vast Indian market but to the wider global economy.
Sitharaman underscored that for Canadian institutional investors, the current climate creates a rare opportunity to move beyond simple portfolio participation. She suggested that Canada could use India as a vital base for broader regional and global financial activities.
Strengthening Financial Ties
During her visit, the Finance Minister held a joint press conference with her Canadian counterpart, François-Philippe Champagne. The discussions focused on creating practical pathways for cooperation in the financial sector, with a particular emphasis on:
- Fintech and Cross-border Payments: Streamlining digital financial infrastructure.
- Financial Stability: Ensuring robust capital market operations.
- Strategic Resources: Exploring multilateral cooperation on critical minerals and energy security.
Tapping into Pension Fund Potential
Addressing questions regarding the interest of Canadian pension funds, Sitharaman pointed to the government’s National Asset Monetization Pipeline as a prime opportunity for institutional players seeking stable, long-term returns.
She noted that Canadian pension funds already maintain a “substantial and long-term presence” across various sectors of the Indian economy. By investing in India’s infrastructure and “sunrise” sectors, these funds can capitalize on the growth of the world’s fastest-growing major economy.
“Pension and sovereign funds are looking for growth areas where their investments will yield strong returns,” Sitharaman said. “India’s aggressive investment in infrastructure and emerging sectors provides immense possibility for these funds to expand their footprints.”
The Finance Minister’s visit marks a strategic effort to solidify the economic bridge between New Delhi and Ottawa, underscoring that India is open for business as it continues its ascent as a global economic leader.
