India-EU hold UN-side-line talks to accelerate 2026 Mobility Partnership

On the margins of the UN International Migration Review Forum in New York, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh met EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner to review implementation of the India-EU Comprehensive Mobility and Migration Partnership signed this January . Discussions focused on pilot projects being run by the newly opened “EU Legal Gateway” office in New Delhi, which acts as a one-stop information centre for Indian students, researchers and professionals seeking opportunities across the 27-member bloc. Officials said they were also mapping mutual skill-demand lists and exploring digital tools to make visa processing more transparent.

At this stage, platforms like VisaHQ can be invaluable allies for applicants and employers alike. The company’s India portal (https://www.visahq.com/india/) centralises up-to-date visa requirements for every EU member state, offers document-check services and even coordinates courier delivery, helping travellers avoid the kind of paperwork snags the two sides are trying to eliminate.

The partnership aims to combine faster legal pathways with stronger action against irregular migration—an approach that mirrors India’s bilateral talent-mobility pacts with Germany, the UK and Portugal. For multinational employers the dialogue matters because it could harmonise documentation requirements across multiple EU missions in India and expand quotas for work-based residence permits. The EU side is analysing early data on student-to-work-permit conversions to fine-tune post-study visa options, while India is showcasing its Skill India International Centres as feeder programmes. Although no immediate policy changes were announced, both parties agreed to convene a joint working group before the northern-hemisphere academic year begins, signalling that incremental facilitations—such as clustered biometric appointments or joint awareness campaigns—may arrive as soon as July 2026.
