India Dominates Day Four in Galle, Extends Lead to 294 Against Sri Lanka

Galle, Sri Lanka – India tightened their stranglehold on the first Test against Sri Lanka, reaching 116-4 at lunch on day four, extending their formidable lead to 294 runs. With six wickets still in hand and the pitch at the Galle International Stadium increasingly favoring spin, the visitors are in a commanding position to dictate terms and secure a victory in the opening match of the two-Test series.

At the lunch break, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was showcasing his aggressive intent, batting confidently on 21 off just 22 balls, featuring a boundary and a maximum. He was accompanied by Dhruv Jurel, who was yet to get off the mark on five.

The day began with an early setback for India as opener Yashasvi Jaiswal fell for a third-ball duck in the second innings, bringing debutant Devdutt Padikkal to the crease in the very first over. Padikkal, who had notched a maiden century in the first innings, continued to impress with his composure and stroke play. The 26-year-old left-hander crafted a valuable 44-run knock before being dismissed minutes before the lunch interval, preventing him from adding another half-century to his burgeoning Test career.

Padikkal, alongside the experienced K.L. Rahul, steadied the Indian innings after the early loss, forging a crucial 65-run partnership for the second wicket. However, Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya proved to be the breakthrough bowler, first dismissing Rahul for 35 runs. Jayasuriya continued his effective spell, also sending back Indian captain Shubman Gill (8), trapping him leg before wicket with a well-pitched delivery.

The day also saw a worrying moment for the hosts when Sri Lankan fielder Dinesh Chandimal sustained an injury. While fielding, Chandimal hit his head on the ground. He was immediately attended to by the team physiotherapist before being transported to a local hospital for precautionary scans, raising concerns about his participation in the remainder of the match.

With the pitch showing significant turn and bounce, making life difficult for the batsmen, India’s substantial lead and remaining wickets put them firmly in the driver’s seat. The tourists will be looking to build on this advantage in the post-lunch session, aiming to set an unassailable target for Sri Lanka and clinch a crucial 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The coming sessions promise to be a fascinating battle between India’s assertive batting and Sri Lanka’s determined spin attack.
