India Dominates Day Four in Galle, Extends Lead to 294 Against Sri Lanka

Galle, Sri Lanka – India has significantly strengthened its position in the first Test against Sri Lanka, reaching 116-4 at lunch on day four, extending their formidable lead to 294 runs. With six wickets still in hand and the Galle pitch increasingly assisting spin, the tourists are poised to secure a decisive victory and take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

At the lunch break, an aggressive Rishabh Pant was batting on 21 off just 22 deliveries, including a boundary and a maximum, alongside Dhruv Jurel, who was on five. The duo will be crucial in further pushing India’s advantage in the post-lunch session.

The second innings began with an early scare for India as opener Yashasvi Jaiswal fell for a third-ball duck. However, first-innings centurion Devdutt Padikkal, who registered a maiden hundred in the first innings, once again showcased his composure and skill. The 26-year-old impressed with a fluent 44-run knock before being dismissed moments before the lunch interval. His innings provided much-needed stability after the early loss.

Padikkal, alongside K.L. Rahul, stitched together a vital 65-run partnership for the second wicket, effectively blunting the Sri Lankan bowling attack. The breakthrough eventually came from left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, who accounted for Rahul’s wicket, dismissing him for 35. Jayasuriya continued to trouble the Indian batsmen, later sending back captain Shubman Gill for a mere 8 runs, trapping him leg before wicket.

Meanwhile, a concerning incident occurred in the field when Sri Lankan player Dinesh Chandimal sustained an injury. He reportedly hit his head on the ground while fielding and was immediately attended to by the team physiotherapist. Chandimal has since been taken to the hospital for precautionary scans, and his condition is being monitored.

With the pitch showing considerable turn and bounce, India’s spinners will be licking their lips at the prospect of bowling in the latter half of the day. Sri Lanka faces a monumental task to prevent India from dictating terms and securing a comfortable victory. The next sessions promise to be crucial as India looks to declare and give their bowlers ample time to wrap up the match. The full match report and live updates can be found on this source.
