India Set to Host Inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027
In a landmark decision for the sport, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that India will host the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027. The high-profile tournament, which was initially slated to be held in Sri Lanka, will now take place in India from February 14 to February 28, 2027.
A New Era for Women’s Cricket
The tournament is set to feature the world’s top six nations, determined by the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings. India, Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, and Sri Lanka have secured their spots for the event. The competition will follow a round-robin league format, concluding with a final between the top two teams, comprising a total of 16 matches in the T20I format.
Matches will be contested at two iconic venues: the Cricket Club of India (CCI) in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium.
Why the Venue Shift?
The decision to relocate the tournament from Sri Lanka stems from persistent governance concerns. The ICC has long-standing regulations regarding government and political interference in the administration of national cricket boards. With Sri Lanka Cricket currently under the management of a government-appointed committee, the ICC deemed it necessary to move the event to ensure compliance with its institutional standards.
Following a thorough evaluation process, India was selected as the host, successfully beating out competitive bids from Bangladesh and South Africa.
