PM Modi Urges Putin to End Ukraine Conflict Ahead of BRICS Summit

In a significant diplomatic exchange, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring a definitive end to the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine. The plea marks a notable moment in India’s efforts to leverage its geopolitical position as a global bridge-builder.

During their recent phone conversation, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the humanitarian cost of the protracted conflict. “Every day spent at war is a step backward for all of humanity, while every step toward peace fills people with fresh hope and inspiration,” the Prime Minister stated, as reported by the Hindustan Times. Modi urged the Russian leader to pivot away from endless military engagement, framing a resolution as an essential step for the collective well-being of the global community.

Strengthening Ties at the Upcoming BRICS Summit

Beyond the urgent call for peace, the conversation served to solidify bilateral ties ahead of a major international gathering. PM Modi extended a formal invitation to President Putin for the upcoming BRICS summit, scheduled to be held in India on September 12–13.

Reflecting on the success of the President’s previous visit to India, Modi noted that the upcoming summit represents a prime opportunity to deepen strategic cooperation. “India will be hosting the BRICS summit in a few days, and all Indians are eagerly looking forward to welcoming you and your delegation,” Modi remarked. According to the Indian Express, President Putin has confirmed his attendance, signaling a commitment to ongoing dialogue despite the pressures of the international political climate.

Contrasting Diplomatic Agendas

The tone of President Putin’s outreach has varied significantly depending on his interlocutor. While his dialogue with Prime Minister Modi centered on the urgent need for a resolution in Ukraine, his recent communication with Chinese President Xi Jinping followed a different trajectory.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that while the two leaders did hold discussions, the war in Ukraine was largely omitted from their agenda. “The Ukrainian crisis was touched upon only in passing — essentially, there was no real discussion of it,” Peskov told the TASS news agency.

The contrast between the two engagements highlights the delicate balancing act being performed by world leaders as they navigate the complexities of the current geopolitical landscape. As the world looks toward the BRICS summit, all eyes will be on whether these high-level discussions can translate into meaningful diplomatic progress regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
