The Brentford midfielder suffered a bizarre injury despite not playing any part in the game
Jordan Henderson looks set to miss the rest of the World Cup after suffering an unfortunate injury shortly after the final whistle in England‘s win over Mexico.
Henderson had not been present on the pitch during the game after being left as an unused substitute by head coach Thomas Tuchel. Instead, the Brentford veteran landed awkwardly as he lost his footing while climbing over the advertising hoardings during the Three Lions’ celebrations after their 3-2 victory at the Azteca Stadium.
Footage on social media showed Henderson landing awkwardly on his right arm and he was slow to get up. Defender Dan Burn called for team doctors to attend to Henderson by the side of the pitch and he was stretchered off.
Henderson required oxygen due to the pain from the injury and he was taken to hospital in Mexico City. The midfielder did not travel back to their base in Kansas City with the rest of the squad.
On Monday, England’s medical team delivered the update that they had feared after determining that the 36-year-old’s wrist injury requires surgery to repair the damage. It looks set to keep Henderson out for the coming weeks as he prepares to go under the knife.
Two-goal hero Jude Bellingham was the first England team member to react to the injury, saying that Henderson was ‘in a bit of bother’.
“Our medical team have everything under control. I’m not best to give too much detail as I do not know much going on, but everyone was there to support him,” Bellingham said.
In his press conference, Tuchel admitted it “didn’t look good” for Henderson after the former Liverpool man underwent an initial examination: “I’m sad because Jordan injured his wrist,” Tuchel told reporters post-match. “It’s quite serious. He’s in hospital. It doesn’t fit with the rest of the evening. I don’t know the procedure.”

Henderson won his 90th cap for his country after coming off the bench during the 2-0 win over Panama in their final group game. That was his sole appearance in North America so far and it remains to be seen whether he will pull on the England shirt again.
The midfielder picked up a bizarre yellow card on the touchline for interfering with the play late in the game. England were forced to battle to victory after Bellingham’s early double put them on course for the next round.
Julian Quinones pulled a goal back before the break and Jarell Quansah’s red card for a lunge on Jesus Gallardo put Tuchel’s men under question, despite leading 2-1. A Harry Kane penalty gave them some desperately-needed breathing room before Raul Jimenez also scored from the spot to ensure a grandstand finish.
But England held on to seal their progress to the quarter-finals after a gutsy display in Mexico. They will face Erling Haaland’s Norway on Saturday for a place in the last four, but now look poised to do so without Henderson.
