Wirral Projects Secure Vital Funding to Champion Sustainability and Community Resilience

Two innovative initiatives in the Wirral are set to transform local attitudes toward consumption and community support after receiving a major boost through the Thriving Communities programme.

The projects, "Rethink Resources" and the "Faith Food Network," aim to empower residents—particularly young people—to take meaningful action on climate change and food insecurity.

Rethink Resources: Transforming Consumption Habits

The "Rethink Resources" project is a bold educational initiative designed to shift how the next generation perceives waste and resource management. By working with community leaders and young people across the Wirral, the program dives deep into the lifecycle of five common consumer products: a pair of jeans, a plastic water bottle, a games console, a bicycle, and a takeaway meal.

In partnership with the Repair Cafe, Faiths4Change is encouraging participants to analyze the social, economic, environmental, and cultural impacts inherent in these everyday items. Moving beyond mere awareness, the project actively promotes sustainable alternatives, such as home composting and repair skills.

A core component of the initiative is the development of peer-led projects, empowering young people to drive behavioural change within their own circles. To ensure these efforts have a lasting impact, the programme is supported by experts from the climate justice, green education, and waste management sectors, who will provide mentorship to help participants transition toward climate-friendly career paths and lifestyles.

Faith Food Network: Strengthening Local Food Security

Complementing these environmental efforts is the "Faith Food Network," a Wirral-wide collaboration aimed at creating a more resilient and coordinated approach to local food security.

The partnership is tasked with mapping and facilitating the growth of various land-based food projects, including faith-led growing initiatives, community composting, foodbanks, pantries, and lunch clubs. By working together, the network aims to identify critical gaps in current provision and uncover new opportunities to support vulnerable residents.

A central output of this partnership will be the creation of a comprehensive toolkit, designed to help additional places of worship establish their own food-focused support services, thereby expanding the safety net for families across the borough.

Together, these initiatives represent a significant step forward for the Wirral, combining practical education with grassroots action to build a more sustainable and supportive future for the community.
