For Matt Jensen, the founder of Australian menswear label M.J. Bale, the path to global expansion has always been clear. For years, he has viewed the international stage through a singular lens: if the world of high-end tailoring were a sport, London would be the undisputed Premier League.

Now, Jensen is preparing to step onto the pitch. In a move that marks a significant milestone for the home-grown brand, M.J. Bale is set to open its debut London flagship this November, positioning itself in the prestigious heart of Mayfair.

A Prime Address

Securing a foothold in London’s competitive retail landscape is no small feat. Jensen’s new store will occupy a prime location at the intersection of Jermyn Street and Duke Street, placing the brand in the immediate vicinity of iconic British institutions like Fortnum & Mason and the historic Piccadilly Arcade.

“It’s arguably the best site on Jermyn Street,” Jensen says with his trademark chutzpah. By choosing this location, M.J. Bale is effectively positioning itself in the shadow of Savile Row—the global epicenter of bespoke tailoring—and challenging the dominance of established names like Drake’s and Huntsman & Sons.

The Challenge of the “Premier League”

While the location is confirmed, the reality of the expansion is currently a frantic mix of logistics and anticipation. Speaking from London in late July, Jensen described the process of preparing for the November launch, which includes everything from managing international shipping lanes to coordinating an intricate fitout.

Beyond the brick-and-mortar requirements, Jensen is focused on maintaining the brand’s unique Australian identity while adapting to the sophisticated London market. To ensure a seamless transition, he plans to fly select Australian store assistants to the UK to train local staff on the brand’s culture and service standards.

The expansion arrives at a time when the retail sector is facing increased scrutiny, but Jensen remains undeterred. When asked if an Australian label can truly compete with centuries-old British institutions, he remains remarkably calm.

“It’s competitive,” Jensen admits. “But we’ve earned the right to participate in the market. We’re coming in confident, not arrogant.”

A Global Ambition

For the M.J. Bale team, the London store is more than just a new lease; it is the realization of a “north star” strategy that has guided the company’s growth for over a decade. Whether the label can sway the traditionalist London shopper remains to be seen, but the brand’s entry into the London market marks the most audacious chapter yet for the Australian retailer.

As November approaches, the industry will be watching closely to see if M.J. Bale’s blend of Australian accessibility and premium craftsmanship can hold its own in the world’s most demanding fashion arena.
