Pakistan Initiates Massive Overhaul After Lord’s Rout: Seven Players, Coaches Sacked
In a drastic move following a demoralizing 194-run defeat at Lord’s, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has launched a sweeping mid-tour restructure of its national team. Facing a 0-2 deficit in their three-match Test series against England, the PCB announced significant changes on Monday, affecting both the playing squad and the coaching staff ahead of the final Test at Edgbaston.
The decision follows a disastrous run of form that has seen the side lose five of their last six Tests, including a crushing innings-and-103-run defeat in the opening match at Leeds.
Sweeping Changes to Playing XI
The board confirmed that seven players have been released from the touring party. The list of exits features several high-profile names, including former white-ball captain Salman Ali Agha, star wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, and opening batter Imam-ul-Haq. Others released include Ali Usman, Aamir Jamal, Muhammad Awais Zafar, and Khurram Shahzad.
The scrutiny on these players had reached a fever pitch following the Lord’s Test. Imam-ul-Haq faced heavy criticism for missing both innings due to a calf injury, with his presence on the field for warm-ups drawing intense fan backlash. Simultaneously, Mohammad Rizwan’s technical struggles, underscored by a poor lbw dismissal during a high-pressure chase, rendered his position untenable.
In their place, the PCB has called up seven reinforcements to bolster the Pakistan Test squad. This includes capped players Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, alongside spin-bowling all-rounder Arafat Minhas. Furthermore, the selectors have opted to inject fresh talent into the side with four uncapped prospects: fast bowler Mohammad Imran Jnr, wicketkeeper-batter Saad Baig, and pace-bowling all-rounders Mohammad Imran (Randhawa) and Razaullah.
Coaching Staff Shake-up
The restructuring extends to the dugout, where the PCB has parted ways with red-ball head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul. The board has opted for a unified approach for the remainder of the tour, installing white-ball head coach Mike Hesson and assistant Ashley Noffke to oversee the team’s preparations.
“The Pakistan Cricket Board has today announced that seven players have been released from the Test squad following the completion of the Lord’s Test,” the PCB stated in an official release. “We are looking to change the momentum and provide opportunities to new talent who are ready to prove themselves at the highest level.”
The Road Ahead
With the series already conceded, the upcoming Test at Edgbaston, scheduled to begin on September 9, has become a test of character for a side in transition. Captain Babar Azam remains at the helm, but he now faces the monumental task of integrating a largely inexperienced squad against a rampant English side.
