World Environment Day this Friday (5th June).

Local people have been encouraged to do one small thing for the local environment, ahead of World Environment Day this Friday (5th June).

World Environment Day, this year, is focusing on how environmental development can bring economic benefits. The UN says that now “Solar panels stretch across rooftops. Wind turbines line the horizon. Cities are being redesigned for people. Forests are being replanted. Positive tipping points are taking root in every corner of the planet.”

However, closer to home, Darren Roe, Managing Director of Peterborough’s biggest bus operator, Stagecoach East, has said that taking the bus for one journey a month, which would otherwise be taken by car, is one small step that everyone can take to improve their environmental impact.

He said: “It is easy to get overwhelmed and not know what to do to help our local environment, but the reality is that, individually, there are simple steps we can all take – and taking the bus is also a great value way to get around.

“Recent research, by trade association CPT, showed what a huge part buses can play in improving our environment. It found that if every person in Great Britain switched just one car trip to bus or coach per month each year, by 2030 it would create a cumulative reduction of 2 million tons of Carbon Dioxide. What’s more, a shift of two trips per month would result in a cumulative reduction of 19.5 million tons by 2050.”
