Star-Studded Comebacks: Esha Deol and Soniya Bansal Join the Cast of ‘Malamaal Weekly 2’
The buzz surrounding the highly anticipated sequel to the 2006 cult classic Malamaal Weekly continues to intensify as the production team reveals two more high-profile additions to its ensemble cast. According to recent reports, Esha Deol and Bigg Boss 17 star Soniya Bansal have officially signed on to star in Malamaal Weekly 2.
A Strategic Comeback
For Esha Deol, the project serves as a perfect vehicle for her return to the silver screen. Known for her memorable performances in past comic capers, Deol had been on the lookout for a script that would offer both substance and the lighthearted charm for which the Malamaal franchise is famous. Sources indicate that upon reading the script, she was immediately drawn to her character and the overall narrative, prompting her to finalize the deal.
Joining her is Soniya Bansal, whose recent stint on Bigg Boss 17 skyrocketed her popularity. Having been approached by the makers with a compelling role, Bansal expressed significant enthusiasm for the project, viewing it as a major opportunity to showcase her acting versatility on the big screen.
A Growing Powerhouse Cast
The addition of Deol and Bansal is the latest development in what has been a whirlwind of casting announcements. The project, now helmed by director Amit Joshi—the visionary behind the 2024 hit Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya—has been steadily building a dream team of talent.
Earlier reports confirmed the inclusion of industry veterans and fan-favorites, including Raveena Tandon, Parineeti Chopra, Fardeen Khan, and Mahesh Manjrekar. Notably, the film also marks a major milestone for actress Shilpa Shirodkar, who is making her official Bollywood comeback after a 26-year hiatus. The comic duo of Elvish Yadav and Rajpal Yadav, the latter of whom returns to the franchise, rounds out what is shaping up to be one of the most eclectic casts of the year.
Capturing the Original Essence
While the anticipation is high, fans should note that Malamaal Weekly 2 will not be a direct continuation of the 2006 original. Instead, the film will feature an entirely fresh storyline. However, producers promise to maintain the “DNA” of the original: a chaotic, humor-filled exploration of small-town life, where ordinary villagers find their lives upended by a mix of poverty, greed, and the promise of sudden wealth.
The original film, directed by Priyadarshan, remains a touchstone of Indian slapstick comedy, centered on the frantic, hilarious quest of three men (played by Paresh Rawal, Riteish Deshmukh, and Rajpal Yadav) to claim a lottery fortune.
Production for Malamaal Weekly 2 is officially scheduled to commence in November 2026. As the filming date approaches, audiences are eager to see if this new, star-studded iteration can recapture the magic and comedic timing that made the first film a beloved staple of Hindi cinema.
