Manchester United qualify for the Champions League after Liverpool victory

Man United will play Champions League football next season after their spot in the top five of the Premier League was confirmed.

Manchester United have secured Champions League football for next season.

The Reds began the weekend on the brink of qualifying for Europe’s elite competition after a sharp upturn in form since Michael Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim in the dugout.

United knew victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford would guarantee a top-five finish, and they got the job done thanks to a 3-2 win over their rivals.

Carrick’s side could also have qualified if Brighton and Bournemouth, the only sides who could push the Reds out of the Champions League places, dropped points this weekend.

The Seagulls were beaten 3-1 on Saturday by Newcastle United, meaning they could no longer reel in United. Bournemouth did their job by beating Palace 3-0 on the south coast, but United weren’t to be denied as they beat Liverpool.

United last played in the Champions League in 2023/24, going out in the group stage under Erik ten Hag. The Reds finished bottom of a group containing Bayern Munich, FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray, winning just one match.
