Matter Secures €21.5M Funding to Accelerate Electric Motorcycle Revolution in India
Matter, an innovator in the electric mobility sector, has announced a significant boost to its growth trajectory with a fresh injection of €21.5 million (₹240 crore) in capital. This latest round, driven by existing investors doubling down on their commitment, brings the company’s total funding to approximately €89.5 million (₹1,000 crore).
With over €67 million (₹750 crore) already funneled into intensive research and development, product manufacturing, and market expansion, the company is positioning itself as a leader in India’s transition to sustainable two-wheelers.
Redefining the Electric Riding Experience
Unlike many competitors who focused on the burgeoning electric scooter market, Matter identified a more complex challenge: the deeply ingrained culture of motorcycle riding in India. Recognizing that riders were reluctant to abandon the tactile experience of traditional motorcycling, the company focused on building a ground-up geared electric motorcycle.
At the heart of their innovation is the HyperShift system—India’s first manual gearbox on an electric motorcycle. By incorporating a clutch and gear-shifting mechanism, Matter provides a traditional riding feel without the tailpipe emissions, successfully bridging the gap between legacy performance and modern electric efficiency.
Innovation and Real-World Validation
The company’s commitment to internal innovation is evidenced by its 111 granted patents, an achievement that earned it the “Best Patent Portfolio” award at the 2025 CII Industrial Intellectual Property Awards.
This technical prowess is backed by rigorous real-world data. The company’s flagship model, the AERA, has already logged over 10 million kilometers in real-world conditions. This massive dataset acts as a continuous feedback loop, allowing Matter to refine its proprietary powertrain, battery systems, and software stacks with every subsequent production unit.
Scaling for the Mass Market
With the recent funding, Matter is entering a new phase of aggressive operational scaling. The company is currently ramping up its manufacturing facility in Ahmedabad to reach a monthly production capacity of 1,000 motorcycles, with plans to surge to 2,500 units shortly thereafter. This move is designed to drastically reduce lead times for customers, ensuring that the transition from order to ownership is seamless.
The company is also expanding its physical retail footprint, targeting India’s “motorcycling heartland”—regions where the motorcycle is a primary necessity for commuting rather than a mere lifestyle product.
Looking ahead, the roadmap is clear. Matter plans to launch four new motorcycles built on the established AERA platform over the next 12 to 24 months. By leveraging its proven, in-house technology stack, the company aims to solidify its position as it continues to Matter India raises €21.5m in fresh growth capital to redefine the future of Indian motorcycling.
