There have been call for justice following an attack on a group of over 60 Christians who were attending a sunday service at a central Indian village.
The persecution charity Christian Solidarity Worldwide has asked the government in India’s Chhattisgarh State to arrest and prosecute those linked to the violence.
The attack happened in Sadrapal village, Sukma District on 31st May.
According to CSW sources, a mob entered the church at around 9.30am demanding people renounce their faith before attacking them. Some in the congregation were children.
Thirty church members sustained injuries, and five were hurt critically. Those connected to CSW said hospital staff initially refused treatment until a First Information Report (FIR), which is required for the police to open an investigation, had been filed which meant treatment was delayed.
Twelve people were eventually arrested on 7th June but all were released three days later.
According to the organisation, Christians in Sadrapal village have faced longstanding discrimination. There are approximately 80 Christian families in the village and many have been denied access to village water sources in recent years being forced to walk long distances to collect it elsewhere.
CSW’s director of advocacy Anna Lee Stangl said: “CSW is deeply concerned by this latest attack on Christians in Chhattisgarh, and particularly by claims that the hospital initially denied treatment to those who urgently needed it.”=
“We urge the relevant authorities to investigate these claims thoroughly and ensure that anyone who has participated in or supported this violence faces appropriate legal consequences.”
In March this year Chhattisgarh passed a new Freedom of Religion Bill, more widely known as an anti-conversion law which relates to existing religious conversions. It is now against the law to force someone to convert to another religions.
However extremists wrongly believe that such laws criminalise all conversions away from Hinduism, or interpret Christianity and its practise as being illegal.
