Georgekutty Returns: Antony Perumbavoor Confirms ‘Drishyam 4’ Following Franchise Success

The blockbuster Malayalam film franchise that redefined the crime-thriller genre in Indian cinema is set to expand once more. Producer Antony Perumbavoor has officially confirmed that a fourth installment of the Drishyam series is in the works, ensuring that the saga of the iconic character Georgekutty is far from over.

A Heartfelt Announcement

The confirmation came during the prestigious Mazhavil Manorama Awards, where Perumbavoor addressed the eager audience. Speaking with conviction, the producer stated that a fourth film is a certainty, describing the announcement as something he was sharing "from his heart."

This news arrives in the wake of the massive success of Drishyam 3, which hit theaters on May 21. Despite receiving mixed reactions from critics and fans alike, the film proved its commercial dominance by storming into the coveted Rs 100 crore club within just a few days of its release, proving that the audience’s appetite for the franchise remains insatiable.

The Legacy of the Franchise

The Drishyam series, which introduced the world to Georgekutty—a humble family man forced to outsmart the law to protect his loved ones—has become a cultural phenomenon. Helmed by director Jeethu Joseph, the original film earned massive critical acclaim and eventually gained international recognition, receiving official remakes in several languages, including Chinese and Korean.

The franchise’s trajectory has been nothing short of extraordinary, with Drishyam 2 receiving a massive reception upon its digital and theatrical release, setting the stage for the third chapter.

Jeethu Joseph’s Vision

While the pressure to churn out sequels is often high after a box-office hit, director Jeethu Joseph has emphasized a more deliberate approach. In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Joseph revealed that Perumbavoor has been a driving force behind the series’ continuity, often encouraging him to explore new narratives even before the previous installment wrapped.

"They said to keep thinking about the story; after the first, keep thinking about the second. Then, while shooting part two, he said let’s start three. Now he’s saying, ‘I think you should work on the fourth one,’" Joseph shared.

However, the director has been clear that he refuses to rush the creative process. Joseph maintains that he is not interested in creating a sequel simply to capitalize on financial success. Instead, he intends to take the necessary time to evolve the characters and explore the unresolved threads in Georgekutty’s life, ensuring that any future installment maintains the high narrative standards that Drishyam 4 fans have come to expect.

As the production gears up for this ambitious new chapter, fans are already speculating on what challenges could possibly lie ahead for Georgekutty, further solidifying the franchise’s place as one of the most successful cinematic journeys in contemporary Malayalam cinema.
