Nashville Airport Poised for Historic Rename in Honor of Dolly Parton

In the wake of the passing of legendary country music icon Dolly Parton, a grassroots movement to rename the Nashville International Airport in her honor has gained significant momentum. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and the leadership of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority officially signaled their support for the proposal this past Friday, setting the stage for what would be a historic tribute to the state’s most beloved cultural ambassador.

The push to rename the transit hub began as an online petition in January 2025. Following Parton’s death this past Tuesday, public support surged, with the petition amassing over 155,000 signatures by Friday afternoon.

A Legacy Worthy of an Airport

Governor Lee, who has already initiated discussions with representatives for the Parton estate, released a statement highlighting the symbolic power of the potential renaming.

“At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness,” Lee stated.

Parton’s life story—rising from humble beginnings in the Great Smoky Mountains to global stardom—made her a unifying figure across generations and political divides. Beyond her legendary songbook, which includes classics like “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You,” she left an indelible mark on Hollywood through iconic roles in films such as 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias.

If approved, the move would place Nashville among a prestigious group of cities that have rebranded their airports to honor cultural icons, including the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville, and John Wayne Airport in Orange County.

Navigating Policy Hurdles

The transition is not without procedural challenges. The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority currently maintains a policy requiring that any individual honored with such a naming must have been deceased for at least two years. However, officials have confirmed that both the governor’s proposal and a potential review of the naming policy are slated for discussion during the board’s upcoming meeting on September 17.

A Global Surge in Streams

As the world mourns the loss of the country music legend, the public has turned to her music in unprecedented numbers. According to data from the analytics company Luminate, Parton’s discography saw a massive resurgence immediately following the news of her death.

In the United States alone, audio and video streams of her catalog surged 2,458% on Tuesday compared to Monday, jumping from 1.2 million to 30.5 million. By Wednesday, that figure climbed to 46.3 million. On a global scale, her on-demand audio streams hit 79.7 million on Wednesday, cementing her status as the most-streamed artist in the world on that date.

As fans continue to advocate for this tribute, the potential Nashville airport to be renamed after Dolly Parton remains a top priority for state officials, reflecting the profound impact one woman had on the heart and soul of Tennessee.
