Sony Implements Aggressive New Customer Service Policy Amidst Ongoing Physical Media Backlash

In the wake of Sony’s controversial July 2026 announcement regarding the future of physical media, the company is doubling down on its customer interaction guidelines. Following months of sustained protest from the PlayStation community, Sony has unveiled an aggressive new policy that could effectively silence its most vocal critics under the guise of combating harassment.

Since the announcement that physical PlayStation 5 discs will be phased out by 2028, the company has faced a wave of dissent. Promotional social media posts, even for titles that will still receive physical releases, are routinely swamped by negative commentary. As the movement grows, Sony’s response appears to be shifting from brand management to punitive enforcement.

Breaking Down the New Policy

The new internal protocol is framed as an anti-harassment measure. On the surface, the guidelines outline standard protections, such as banning abusive language, sexual misconduct, threats against employees, and unauthorized visits to company offices. However, the fine print contains language that has alarmed the gaming community.

Included in the list of prohibited behaviors are “persistent and repeated, or prolonged, demands,” “requests unrelated to products or services,” and “demands against employees.” Perhaps most concerning to observers is the company’s admission that this list is not exhaustive.

Critically, this vague terminology appears to target the very tactics being employed by fans protesting the shift to an all-digital ecosystem. Sony has signaled that violations of these new terms could result in the suspension or complete restriction of customer service access. In extreme cases, the company has threatened to cooperate with law enforcement and pursue legal action, including criminal proceedings, against those who cross the line.

A Growing Divide

The tension between Sony and its player base shows no sign of abating. The controversy is compounded by Sony’s ongoing defense in a separate class-action lawsuit, where the company recently argued that consumers do not technically “own” their digital game libraries—the very model that will eventually become the only option for PlayStation users.

As players continue to push the “No disc. No buy” mantra, it remains unclear how Sony intends to enforce these new guidelines. The company has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding whether legitimate consumer advocacy will be conflated with the harassment they seek to prevent.

For now, the policy change serves as a clear warning shot to those leading the digital blackout protests. Whether this aggressive pivot will suppress the outcry or further embolden the opposition remains to be seen as the PS5 disc protest continues to escalate across social media platforms.
