All four suspects were taken into custody amid ongoing enquiries into the incident. The victim was rushed to hospital for treatment.

In an update, Greater Manchester Police said all four suspects have since been bailed pending enquiries. Investigations remain ongoing.

Detective Chief Inspector Lee Shaw of GMP’s Wigan district said last week: “We understand that incidents like this can be concerning for our communities, but I want to reassure residents and visitors that this appears to be an isolated incident.”

He continued: “There will be an increased police presence in Wigan town centre over the weekend to provide reassurance and ensure people can continue to enjoy the area safely. Please speak to our officers if you have any concerns.”
