Double Fine Returns to Its Roots: Amnesia Fortnight 2026 Launches to Shape Studio’s Future

Following a period of significant transition, iconic developer Double Fine has officially charted a new course as an independent entity. In a move that celebrates the studio’s community-driven history, Tim Schafer’s team has announced the return of their beloved game jam event, Amnesia Fortnight 2026.

The initiative, set to launch on Kickstarter on August 31, 2026, invites fans to take an active role in the studio’s development process. Much like the fan-favorite jams of the past, Double Fine will host a live, transparent game jam where the developers will pitch a wide array of experimental ideas. Supporters will then hold the power to vote on these pitches, narrowing them down to four distinct prototypes. From those four, one project will be selected to move forward into full-scale production as an official Double Fine title.

"We’re going to do a Game Jam, live on the internet, in which our backers will get to choose which of our myriad of ideas get made into four new prototypes — and which of those final four will become a real (small) game," the studio stated in its official announcement.

This announcement follows a period of heavy restructuring for the studio. Last month, Double Fine—best known for the Psychonauts franchise, Brutal Legend, and Broken Age—confirmed the difficult decision to lay off 23 employees. Tim Schafer explained at the time that the move was a necessary, albeit painful, step to ensure the studio’s long-term survival following its departure from Microsoft’s umbrella. "Our transition to becoming an independent company also means becoming a size that we can sustain," Schafer noted.

The announcement was preceded by an appearance on the Kinda Funny Games YouTube channel, where the team signaled their desire to reconnect with their roots and embrace the "indie-pendence" that defined their earlier years.

As the studio looks toward a future defined by community collaboration, the question remains: which classic Double Fine intellectual property might be ripe for a revival? With gems like Costume Quest and Stacking in their portfolio, the return of the Amnesia Fortnight format provides a blank slate for the team to either innovate with new concepts or revisit the beloved worlds that built their reputation.

Supporters interested in influencing the next chapter of the Psychonauts developer can look forward to the project’s official crowdfunding launch at the end of the month, which promises not only to dictate the studio’s output but also to offer exclusive merchandise and rarities for backers.
