Jaipur: The Rajasthan education department is considering introducing Hindi-medium classes in nearly 300 Mahatma Gandhi Govt Schools with poor enrolment while retaining English-medium education and has sought detailed reports from all districts within seven days. In an order issued by the Director of Secondary Education, district education officers have been asked to identify schools where student strength is extremely low and assess the feasibility of admitting Hindi-medium students. The move aims to improve enrolment and make better use of existing infrastructure instead of shutting down or merging schools. Officials have been directed to submit class-wise enrolment figures before and after the schools were converted to English medium, along with details of nearby Hindi-medium schools, their distance from the English-medium schools, and current class-wise enrolment. The department has also sought an assessment of whether introducing Hindi-medium classes on the same campus would affect students already studying in the English medium. Schools with healthy English-medium enrolment are unlikely to see any changes. A senior education department official said the proposal is intended to utilise underused academic capacity and respond to local demand for Hindi-medium education. The report will also help the department rationalise deployment of teachers, as several schools currently have more teachers than students. Final decisions will be taken after district-wise reports are reviewed.
