Priyanka Chopra Reflects on the "Pretentious" Nature of Bollywood in Resurfaced Interview
Mumbai: For over two decades, Priyanka Chopra Jonas has been a dominant force in global entertainment. However, beneath the glamour and the accolades, the superstar has never been one to shy away from uncomfortable truths. In a resurfaced clip from her appearance on the iconic talk show Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, the actress offered a candid assessment of the Hindi film industry, pointing to a culture of superficiality that she once found herself succumbing to.
During the interview, Chopra was remarkably transparent about the environment she navigated during her rise to stardom. When asked about her perception of the industry, she did not mince words.
"I don’t like people who are pretentious, and most of them are," the Fashion actress stated. "I mean, we do have intelligent people around, but there are so many people who are so fake, that’s something I just cannot stand."
Perhaps more striking was her admission of her own early experiences in the industry. Chopra confessed that the pressure to conform was immense, acknowledging that in the early days of her career, she risked losing her authentic self. "I think even I was in the beginning, very, very much [pretentious]," she admitted. "That is completely and entirely not what I am."
This Priyanka Chopra revealed what she does not like about Hindi Film Industry during her formative years in the spotlight, a time when she was transitioning from a beauty queen to one of India’s most bankable stars. Following her 2003 debut in The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, she went on to deliver a string of powerhouse performances in films like Andaaz, Aitraaz, Krrish, Don, Barfi!, Mary Kom, and Bajirao Mastani.
Since establishing herself as an A-lister in India, Chopra has successfully transcended borders, making significant strides in Hollywood. Her recent international credits include the action-packed series Citadel and upcoming projects such as The Bluff and Heads of State.
Now, the actress is poised for a major homecoming. Fans are eagerly awaiting her return to Indian cinema as the leading lady in SS Rajamouli’s highly anticipated action-adventure drama, Varanasi.
In the film, Chopra is set to portray Mandakini, a fierce historian. The narrative will reportedly follow her character as she accompanies the protagonist, Rudhra—played by Mahesh Babu—on a high-stakes, globetrotting mission to save the holy city of Varanasi from the threat of an asteroid named Shambhavi. As she prepares to step back into the heart of Indian filmmaking, fans continue to admire the "Desi Girl" for the same trait that has defined her career: an unapologetic commitment to her authentic voice.
