Veteran Bollywood actor Kalpana Iyer, best remembered for her iconic performance in the hit track “Rambha Ho,” has opened up about the professional challenges she faces as she attempts to stage a comeback. Nearly a year after a viral video of her dancing brought her back into the public consciousness, the 70-year-old actor has shared a candid and poignant social media post detailing her frustration with being ignored by the film industry.

A Plea for Professional Courtesy

Following her surge in popularity, which saw her appearing on various podcasts and expressing a clear desire to return to acting, Iyer was hopeful for new opportunities. However, she now reveals that the reality has been far from welcoming. In a heartfelt note shared on Instagram, she addressed the issue of being “ghosted” by industry professionals.

“I have been trying hard to be decent about everything… but it’s not fair to me to be honest,” Iyer wrote. She emphasized that she is not seeking special treatment or acting like a “diva,” but rather advocating for basic professional etiquette. “I want work fair and square, and if you contact me, I am grateful. But if it is not happening, tell me, inform me, ask me.”

The actor noted that clear communication is essential, as it would allow her to understand the situation or perhaps offer alternatives that could benefit both parties.

Seeking Opportunity, Not Sympathy

Iyer, who has lived in Dubai for the past 27 years, was quick to clarify that her statement was not a targeted attack on any specific individual. Instead, it is a broader plea for respect for seasoned artists.

“It is about a 70-year-old saying be fair and decent, and I think I can expect this from you,” she stated. She expressed frustration at the lack of consideration, particularly when she is willing to take on any role, regardless of its duration, provided it is age-appropriate.

“I am open to work. I have never said no. Just give me age-appropriate roles. Even a one-minute part—if it fits, why wouldn’t I do it?” she had previously stated in an interview.

Kalpana Iyer’s career began at the tender age of 12, leading to her breakout moment in Dev Anand’s Lootmaar. She became a household name with the song “Rambha Ho,” a track that continues to resonate with audiences today, even finding new life in modern projects like Dhurandhar.

Despite her storied career and willingness to work, the actor has faced a long hiatus. Reflecting on her last major cinematic appearance in the 1999 classic Hum Saath Saath Hain, she admitted to a lingering sense of disappointment: “Ever since Hum Saath Saath Hain, I have been waiting. For one role. One elusive phone call.”
